Ingredients
1 sponge cake (store-bought or homemade), about 1 inch thick
1 quart of your favorite ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, or a combination)
4 large egg whites
1 cup granulated sugar
¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Prepare the Base: Preheat your oven to 500°F (260°C). Place the sponge cake on a baking sheet. If using homemade sponge cake, ensure it’s completely cooled.
Add Ice Cream: Scoop the ice cream onto the center of the sponge cake, shaping it into a dome. Place the cake and ice cream in the freezer to firm up for at least 1 hour.
Make the Meringue: In a clean, dry bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Gradually add the granulated sugar, cream of tartar, and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until stiff peaks form and the meringue is glossy.
Cover the Cake: Remove the cake and ice cream from the freezer. Spread the meringue over the ice cream and cake, making sure to seal the edges completely.
Bake: Place the assembled Baked Alaska in the preheated oven for about 3-5 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.
Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a couple of minutes. Slice and serve immediately. Enjoy your classic Baked Alaska!
