Smothered Hamburger Steak 🍽️🥩
Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- 1/4 cup water (if using cornstarch)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Patties:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Mix until just combined, then form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
- Cook the Patties:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Sauté the Onions:
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
- Create the Gravy:
- Pour in the beef broth and soy sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with water in a small bowl and add it to the skillet. Stir until the gravy thickens.
- Combine and Simmer:
- Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them.
- Cover and let simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve:
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
- Serve the smothered hamburger steaks with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
